Six Mile has a Council Mayor form of Government in which the Mayor & four council members are elected for four-year staggered terms. The Town Council meets at 7pm on the first Tuesday of each month at Town Hall.
The town of Six Mile is nestled on the western edge of the rolling Piedmont Plateau region, with elevations ranging from 950-1060 feet. The town is located in the southwestern section of Pickens County about 9 miles southwest of Pickens, the County seat, and 9-miles north of the city of Clemson. Six Mile is about 35 miles west of Greenville, SC and 140 miles northwest of Atlanta, GA. Just west of the town are three popular lakes, Hartwell, Keowee, and Jocassee, which serve a dual purpose of power generation and recreation. Six Mile’s location is highly accessible to visitors via Highway 123, 183, 133, 137, & 11. Six Mile has a total land area of approximately 1055 acres, or about 1.5 square miles.
Six Mile is located on one of the most famous paths of travel in the United
States, the Keowee or Cherokee Path and a semi-rural, residential
community with a mix of small commercial businesses. Most
of the development within the town is located along SC Hwy. 133, which divides
the town and serves as its main street. The panoramic background of the Blue
Ridge Mountains, and namely Six Mile Mountain, evokes an inviting and rural
character.
The
climate of Six Mile is mild and temperate with rainfall evenly distributed
throughout the year.
The 2000 census showed a population of 554. The town’s residents are employed in a variety of occupations ranging from professors, teachers, auto mechanics, government officials, textile employee’s, accountants, manufacturers, merchants & students.
The Six Mile Volunteer Fire Department currently has 24 volunteers. The department includes 2-pumper trucks, a tanker and a grass/brush truck, all housed in the 6-bay fire station located besdide Town Hall. The Six Mile Fire District consists of over 2000 customers (dwellings/structures) within an approximate 5-mile radius of the Town of Six Mile. The annual fire subscription is $51.00
Pickens County Emergency Medical Service (EMS) provides pre-hospital emergency care and transport for ill and injured persons. The county agency staffs EMS units with paramedics and emergency medical technicians on a 24-hour basis. EMS also provides ambulances during weekdays for emergency and non-emergency hospital and convalescent transport. The non-emergency number is 868-0733.
Within a short distance from Six Mile are several excellent hospitals. The closest is Cannon Memorial Hospital in Pickens & Palmetto Baptist Hospital in Easley. Oconee Hospital is approximately 18-Miles away. Other medical facilities such as Greenville Memorial and Shriners Children’s Hospital are within 35-miles of Six Mile.

Six Mile Recreation is an all-volunteer department providing recreational programs and facilities for the youth of the community. Youth programs including T-ball, baseball, softball, football, soccer, and cheerleading are available for boys & girls, ages 5 through 18.
